Snapshots and Chanting as Ethiopian Citizens Observe Thanksgiving

Celebrants in traditional attire

Tens of thousands of brightly clothed attendees assembled in downtown Addis Ababa for the yearly Irreecha event during recent days.

Irreecha is honored by the Oromo community, the predominant community, and is held at the completion of the land's primary wet season.

Festival gathering near water

Annually, festival-goers gather around sacred natural water sources to show appreciation to their higher powers for the fertile landscape that the rains have provided.

"I've attended the festival for the previous nine years," commented young adult Moata Abdulmajid.

"In my view, Irreecha symbolizes my cultural background, it showcases the dignity and importance of my community."

Traditional clothing and jewelry

Gentlemen, ladies, the senior citizens and the young all take part, adorned in eye-catching attire and accessories.

They chant, perform traditional dances, tell tales and place recently harvested grass and floral arrangements in the water - symbolizing existence, renewal and aspiration.
